This study examined associations between behavioral indices of inhibitory control and cortical activation during a Go/No-Go task in typically developing elementary school children using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Forty-five right-handed fourth graders completed a block-designed Go/No-Go paradigm while prefrontal activation was recorded with a multi-channel fNIRS system. GLM-based β values of oxygenated hemoglobin (ΔHbO) in the right DLPFC/FP region were calculated for the No-Go > Go contrast and correlated with behavioral indices of inhibitory control, including accuracy, reaction time, and commission errors. Children showed the typical pattern of reduced accuracy and prolonged reaction time on No-Go trials. Increased right DLPFC activation in Brodmann area 46 and overlapping DLPFC/FP (BA46/10) was associated with lower No-Go accuracy and, for BA46/10, higher commission errors, suggesting compensatory recruitment of executive-control resources under greater inhibitory load. Findings highlight the potential of fNIRS-based Go/No-Go paradigms as neurobiologically informed screening tools for school-based assessment of inhibitory control.
